Tripp and Pamela's apartment....early morning
"Look, I've already explained what my problem is," Cliff says to the officer on the phone. "My daughter has disappeared from her apartment this morning. Her baby and her mother have already been kidnapped, so don't tell me to CALM DOWN!"
At that moment, the door opens and Tripp walks in with the baby. "Oh my God, Tripp," Tracey says as her nephew walks in.
Cliff immediately hangs up the phone. "Oh good Lord," he says, walking over to Tripp. "My grandson. Where's Pamela?"
"And where did you find the baby?" Tracey asks.
"While I was out looking for Pamela, she called me," replies Tripp.
"Called you? Called you from where?" Cliff asks.
"I don't know. She called me and said I needed to go to the North Highlands public pool, and the baby would be there. I went, and just as Pamela said, the baby was in the women's bathroom."
"And where the hell is my daughter?" Cliff asks.
"I don't know. But after I got the babym I called the cops. I think.........I think she was taken by the same person who kidnapped the baby........and Afton.
Cliff, Mitch, and Tracey all exchange looks of worry.
Southfork......later
"What time are you guys taking off for California?" Lucas asks his father.
"We're planning to take off around 10:30. The wedding has been postponed to tomorrow afternoon, and Ann's gonna help Emma with any last minute planning." The three walk over to a limousine parked in the parking area in back of the house. A chauffeur is waiting with the vehicle's trunk open.
"Morning, Mr. Ewing," the young chauffeur says.
"Good morning, Eric, and how are you this morning?"
"Just fine sir, thank you."
"Good," Bobby says, handing the young man the two bags. Eric takes them and places them in the trunk.
"Grandpa, when are you coming back?" Little Michael asks.
"We are gonna be back in a couple days, and then, you and I are gonna start those ropin' lessons I've been promisin' ya. Deal?"
"Deal!" Michael says.
Heather and Lucas smile at their son as Ann and Lucy come out of the house, Ann carrying another small bag.
"Lucy, I really wish you'd come with us," Ann tells her. "I know you and Emma have never been that close, but it'd do ya good just to get away from Southfork for a couple days."
"Fair enough," Ann says as they walk up to the others at the limousine.
"Besides, me and this little guy are gonna hang out some this weekend, right, Michael?" Lucy asks.
"Right!" The little boy replies with a smile.
"Honey, we'd better get goin' to the airport," says Bobby.
"We have to wait for John Ross," Ann says. "He was on his way down when he got a phone call."
"Well, there he comes now," Bobby says as his nephew emerges from the house and heads toward them carrying Little John in one arm and the baby's nurse, Caroline, carrying two bags, one belonging to John Ross, and the other for the baby.
"John Ross, I'm real surprised that you're going to California for Emma's wedding," Lucas says.
"Well, cousin Lucas, after everything that's happened lately, I need to get away from Southfork for a while, and I need to have a word with Elena's husband," John Ross says as he hands the baby to his nurse.
Bobby looks disapprovingly at his nephew. "John Ross, we're going to San Francisco to attend a WEDDING, not to engage in another war with the Channings. There'll be time for that later."
Charlie and Alex get out of the car, Alex carrying a duffle bag.
"Good mornin'," Ann says, greeting them.
"Morning," says Charlie.
"Charlie, how ya doin'?" Bobby asks, greeting her with a hug.
"I'm doing just fine, Bobby."
"Here, let's put your bag in back," John Ross tells his son, taking Alex's bag.
"Charlie, wouldn't you like to come with us?" Bobby asks.
"No, thanks, Bobby," Charlie replies. "I plan to spend this weekend relaxing with a good book, something I haven't done in a while."
"Well, ya know, sis, if you get bored you can always come over here and hang out with us," Lucas says.
"OR," says Lucy. "You can go with me and Michael to the water park this afternoon. I thought I'd take him there and give these two some time alone together at Southfork."
"This will be the first time Lucas and I have been alone together at Southfork," Heather says. "We won't know what to do with ourselves."
"Oh, I'm sure you'll think of something," Lucy says.
"Charlie, thanks for lettin' Alex go," John Ross says.
"No problem, John Ross. You just take good care of him."
"You're 16. You won't be 17 for a couple months yet," says Charlie. "So the wedding is this afternoon?"
"Originally, it was supposed to be late this afternoon," replies Ann. "But because we had that fundraiser last night, and because Kevin's father won't be leaving Dallas for San Francisco until today, Emma and Kevin decided to postpone it until late tomorrow, which I'm happy about, because now I can get there and help her with any last minute plans for the weddin'. Or......talk her out of it, which would be the ideal outcome."
"Well, everybody, we'd better get goin'," Bobby says.
Charlie walks over to her son and hugs him. "You behave yourself," she says. "And you take good care of him, John Ross."
"Charlie, would ya stop your worryin'," John Ross says with a sigh. "It's not like Alex hadn't been to California with me before."
"You're right," Charlie says. "Besides, Bobby, Ann, and Christopher are gonna be there, too, so I should stop worrying."
John Ross looks at her. "So you're sayin' you trust the rest of the fam'ly to take better care of my son than I can?"
"I'm not saying that at all. I just know how distracted you get sometimes."
"Hey, we'd better go. Christopher and Courtney are gonna meet us at the airport," Bobby says. "Charlie, don't worry, your son will be very well taken care of."
"I know, Bobby, and thanks," Charlie says.
Alex kisses his mother and then piles into the limousine with John Ross, the nurse, Little John, Bobby, and Ann.
"You guys have a good trip," Heather says as they close the limo door. Heather, Lucas, Michael, Lucy, and Charlie watch as the limousine drives away from Southfork.
"Charlie, have you had breakfast?" Lucas asks his sister.
"I had a banana and some orange juice."
"Well, how about joining us for some waffles?" Heather asks.
Charlie smiles. "Waffles sounds nice. I'd love to."
"Good, let's go," says Lucas.
"Charlie, you sure you wouldn't like to come with me and Michael to the water park this afternoon?" Lucy asks as the group walks toward the house.
"No, thanks, Lucy. Like I said earlier, I just wanna relax and enjoy this quiet weekend alone with a good book."
Meanwhile.....
Justin and Amanda's home....
Meanwhile, Amanda comes down the stairs. She looks around the living room, then walks into the kitchen, where she sees Justin's beer and tackle box on the counter. Walking over to the patio doors, she looks into the backyard and sees Justin bringing three of his fishing rods from the shed to the back porch. Sliding the glass door open, she walks onto the porch. "Justin?"
"Oh, hey, darlin'," he says, placing the pools against the porch rail. "I tried not to wake ya." He walks over and grabs another box and places next to the fishing rods.
"You didn't. Justin, what are you doing?"
"Justin, you must be exhausted after last night. And Jimmy might not wanna go."
"Nonsense. I feel fine, and yes, Jimmy does wanna go. He's on his way over here right now."
"Oh," Amanda says nervously. "So, you're coming back today or tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow," Justin replies. "May as well get out there and really enjoy nature. You........you wanna come, too?"
"No. Thanks, but, no."
"Well, I DID offer," Justin says as Jimmy's truck pulls into the driveway. "Well, there's Jimmy now."
Jimmy's truck comes to a stop in the back yard. He gets out of the truck and he and Amanda immediately exchange awkward looks between them.
"Jimmy, you're about ten minutes late, bro," Justin says.
"Yeah, sorry, I couldn't find all my fishing stuff."
"Well, you bring your cooler?"
"Yeah, it's on the back of the truck," Jimmy replies.
"I got a 24 case of beer in the house. I'll get it and my tackle box. Can you load this other stuff up? We can take my truck."
"Okay, sure," Jimmy says as Justin goes into the house, closing the glass door behind him.
"Are you crazy?" Amanda asks Jimmy. "Are you REALLY going on a weekend fishing trip with him after what happened last night?"
"Yeah, I am. He wasn't exactly taking no for an answer."
"Couldn't you have come up with some kind of excuse to get out of this?"
"Amanda, just stop worrying. I'm not gonna say a word to him about last night."
"What if you let something slip?" Amanda asks.
"Normal?" Amanda asks. "Jimmy, there's no such thing as 'normal' anymore."
Justin comes out of the house at that moment, carrying the case of beer in one hand and his tackle box in the other. "Well, let's get this beer in the cooler, and then we can go." He stops short when he sees that Jimmy hasn't loaded all of their equipment onto Justin's truck. "Hey, how come ya didn't load up?"
"Ummm, I'm sorry, bro, I......."
"It was my fault," Amanda interrupts. "Jimmy and I got to talking."
Justin smiles. "Oh, well, let's load up."
"You get the beer in the cooler, and I'll put everything on the truck. Sure you don't wanna just take mine?"
"Nah. We'll take mine," Justin replies. "I know where Jay's fam'ly's cabin, and you don't." He turns back to his wife. "Love ya, darlin'," he says, kissing her as an uncomfortable Jimmy looks on. "See ya when I get back."
"Yeah," says a nervous Amanda, a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach that it was a big mistake for Jimmy to go away on a weekend trip with Justin. Amanda watches the two young men as they load everything onto the back of Justin's truck. "Justin......" she calls to her husband as they are getting into Justin's truck.
"Yeah, sweetheart?"
"Call me tonight," Amanda says. "Let me know you guys made up there alright."
Justin looks at her for a second before answering. "I sure will," he says. He then looks at Jimmy, who is already seated on the passenger side of Justin's truck. "Well, Jimbo, how 'bout we get goin'? Sooner we get this show on the road......the better," Justin says ominously.
An uneasy Amanda watches as the two drive away.
Dallas Police Department....
"No, Lt. Daniels. We haven't even heard from him since yesterday."
"What? Ya mean he hadn't even called in?" Lt. Daniels asks.
"Nope, not a word. He doesn't answer his phone, either."
The Lt. sighs deeply. "That aint like Miller. Pete, have a couple officers go over to Miller's apartment. If he's not there, then, we best do some investigatin'. I got a real bad feelin'."
"You think somethin' happened to him, sir?" Pete asks.
"Yeah. With Jones bein' shot, and in light of the case he and Miller were workin' on, what else can I think. Dispatch those officer's to Miller's apartment ASAP, and let me know as soon as they call it in."
"On it, sir," Pete says.
"Lt. Daniels," says another officer as he walks over.
"Yeah, Rick, what's up?"
"Detectives Miller and Jones were workin' on that Afton Cooper stalker case, weren't they?"
"Yeah, they were. Why?"
"We got a call this mornin' from Afton Cooper's daughter's husband. Miss Cooper's daughter is missing, and her baby, who had been kidnapped, has been found."
Lt. Daniels looks at at his officer. "Alright, thanks, Rick. Come with me. I'm goin' over to the McKay apartment."
"Yes, sir," Rick says as he rushes out of the department with the Lt.
Texas Presbyterian Health Hospital....
"Oh, Sue Ellen," he says.
"I'm sorry, Bum, I didn't mean to startle you."
"That's alright," Bum says, standing.
"I just heard this morning about what happened to your son. Bum, I am SO sorry. How is he?"
"Thank ya, Sue Ellen. He's, uh, he's holdin' his own for right now. Still hasn't woken up."
Bum, is there anything I can do?" Sue Ellen asks.
Sue Ellen smiles. "That's what friends are for. I'll get out of here. I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I'm thinking of you. And if there's anything at all I can do, you don't hesitate to give me a call."
"I really appreciate that, Sue Ellen, and I sure will," Bum says.
As Sue Ellen is about to leave, she and Bum here a loan moan come from Steven. They turn and look at him. He moans again. Bum rushes over to his son's bedside as Sue Ellen looks on.
"Steven," Bum says to him. "Steven, can you hear me?"
Slowly, the young man opens his eyes and looks at his father.
"Can you hear me, son?" Bum repeats.
"Bum?" Steven asks weakly.
"Yes."
"What are you.......doing here?"
"I've been here since you were shot."
"Bum, I'll get the nurse," Sue Ellen says, quickly leaving the room.
"Steven, do you remember what happened?" Bum asks.
A far away look comes over Steven's face as he lets himself think back a few nights, to the night he and his partner Scott went back to Steven's apartment after leaving the gym. A look of fear comes over his face.
"Steven? Do you remember?"
Steven looks up at his father. "Yes," he says, his voice trembling as the nurse comes in with Sue Ellen. "I remember. My God."
"Detective Jones, how do you feel?" the nurse asks.
Ignoring her, Steven looks at Bum again. "Scott? Is he in jail?"
"Scott?" Bum asks. "You mean your partner, Detective Miller? Steven, why would he be in jail?"
"He.......he shot me. He's the one who tried to kill me," Steven replies.
Bum looks at his son, his eyes growing wide with shock, stunned by what his son has said. Steven's own partner on the police force had been the one who tried to kill him. Bum looks at Sue Ellen. "Please stay with him," he tells her. "I've gotta call the police." Bum quickly leaves the room. Outside in the hall, Bum takes his cell phone from his pocket and dials the number of the Dallas Police Department. Someone answers very quickly. "I need to speak to Lt. Kenneth Daniels or Lt. Steve Walden. Thanks."
Tripp and Pamela's apartment....
"And when you got to the bathroom at the pool, you didn't see anyone around?" Lt. Daniels asks.
"NO!" Replies a frustrated Tripp. "I've already said it several times, I did NOT see or hear anyone around. But at the time, I had just found my son who'd been missing, so all I could concentrate on was him, and getting him home safely. As soon as I got back to my truck with my son, I called the police."
"Mr. Barnes, just calm down," says Lt. Daniels.
"I wish you people would STOP TELLING ME TO CALM DOWN, I'M NOT GONNA CALM DOWN AS LONG AS AFTON AND MY DAUGHTER ARE STILL IN DANGER!" Cliff yells.
"Cliff, why don't you just let the police do their jobs?" Mitch asks.
"AND WHY DON'T YOU STAY THE HELL OUT OF THIS?!"
An angry Mitch looks at him. "Well, I've got news for you, Barnes, that's my sister and my niece out there, AND this maniac murdered my son, so I'm NOT going to just stay out of this!"
Immediately, Cliff feels bad for what he'd said. "Mitch, I'm sorry, I didn't mean any of that. I'm just......"
"Yeah, Cliff, I know. Me too."
"Look, we're all on edge here," Tracey says. "Lt., isn't there anything more you people can do besides sit around here asking my nephew the same questions over and over?"
"We're doing all we can, Miss McKay," Lt. Daniels says as his phone rings. "Excuse me," he says, taking his phone out. He stands, walks to the other side of the room, and answers. "Lt. Daniels," he says. "Yes? Detective Jones is awake?" The Lt. listens for a few moments to the person on the other end of the line, then his mouth falls open and his eyes grow wide with shock. "Would you repeat that? Oh my God. Yes, put out an APB on Scott Miller and approach with caution. He possibly has two female hostages." Daniels ends the call and puts his phone away.
"Lt., who was that?" Tripp asks. "Was that about my wife and Afton?"
Lt. Daniels looks at the group. "Detective Jones has regained consciousness. He told his father who shot, and.........who is behind not only Afton Cooper's stalking, but also the murders of Jan Pierce and Jesse Matthews."
"Who? Tell me," Tripp says. "Who the hell has my wife?"
"Detective Scott Miller," the Lt. replies, much to everyone's shock. "He was behind all of this. And he tried to kill his partner when Detective Jones put the pieces together."
Cliff, Tripp, Mitch, and Tracey all exchange looks, none of them able to believe what they've just heard.
On board the Ewing Jet bound for California....
"You look like you're dreadin' this just about as much as I am," Bobby says to her.
"Oh, I am. Probably more. Not only is my daughter marryin' into a fam'ly that I don't like or trust, and who's caused our fam'ly no end of trouble, but her new mother-in-law is gonna be Katherine Wentworth, a woman who tried to kill my husband twice, AND, I have to worry about John Ross startin' a fight with the groom's brother in the middle of the weddin'. Is there anything about this trip NOT to dread?"
Bobby laughs. "Well, honey, for Emma's sake, we just have to grin and bear it. John Ross has already said he itn't gonna start any trouble, and I intend to make sure he keeps his word. And after tomorrow this whole thing'll be over and we'll be back at Southfork."
"Bobby, this'll never be over," Ann says. "With Emma marryin' Kevin Channing and pregnant with his baby, the Ewings are gonna be tied to the Channings from now on."
"Well, honey, the upside of this whole thing is that the Channings are in California, and NOT in Dallas. And now that Katherine has married Richard, that means that she'll be out of Dallas, too."
Ann's brother Mark walks over to them. "Annie, Bobby," he says. "Really appreciate you two lettin' us tag along to Emma's weddin'. Means a lot."
Ann smiles as she looks up at her brother. Well, it means a lot to me that you're here, Mark."
"I just wish I could've convinced Mama to come."
"You talked to Mama recently?" Ann asks.
"No, I guess not," Ann says sadly.
Bobby puts his arm around his wife. "Mark, any luck findin' a better job?"
"No. Guess I'm gonna be stuck at that plant for a while."
"Bobby, itn't there some kinda job you can give Mark at Ewing Oil?" Ann asks.
Mark and Bobby exchange looks. "Annie, no," Mark says. "Look, I'm not gonna take advantage of your husband by askin' him for a job."
"Well, Mark, when we get back from California, we can talk about it," Bobby says, giving his brother-in-law a look of suspicion. Mark may be Ann's brother, but Bobby just couldn't shake the feeling that he wasn't the changed man Ann seems to think he is.
Meanwhile, Alex returns from grabbing two sodas from a refrigerator near the front of the plane. He hands one to Mark's son Shawn, then takes a seat across from his friend.
"Thanks, dude," Shawn says, popping the can open.
"You look like you're not too thrilled about this trip," Alex says, taking a sip of his soda.
"What, going to the wedding of a cousin I've never met before? I'm NOT, bro. I don't see why we had to come, anyway. It's not like my Dad's real close to my Aunt Ann's daughter. I think he's met her, like, once."
"Well, Emma Ryland is DEFINITELY not one of my favorite people," says Alex. "But I'm just glad to be getting away from home for the weekend. Besides, it'll be awesome, you'll get to meet and hang out with a couple friends of mine I got to know when I went out to California with John Ross and Krystina a couple months ago."
"Yeah, speakin' of that sexy stepmom of yours, where is she, dude?"
"Long story. But she and John Ross are separated right now. I don't know what happened."
Shawn looks over at John Ross sitting on the other side of the plane. "No wonder he's so down in the mouth."
Alex looks over at John Ross, who is reading a report. "Yeah, he's really been upset since Krystina moved out."
Back in Dallas.....Marilee Stone's mansion
"Oh, hello, sir," George says.
"George, is my mother home?"
"Yes, sir, she's in her office. I'll let Mrs. Stone know that you're here."
"Don't bother, George," Brad says as he starts walking down the hall toward his mother's office. A moment later, as Marilee is working at her desk, Brad bursts into the office. "Mother," he says. "I heard you were back from Europe."
Marilee smiles as she stands from her seat. "Well, hello, darling. Yes, I flew home yesterday afternoon. My trip was very refreshing."
"Yeah, I'll bet it was," Brad says sarcastically, taking a seat in the chair across from Marilee.
She retakes her own seat at her desk. "Would you like a glass of wine?"
"No, thank you."
"I'm very sorry you haven't been able to get in touch with me all these weeks I've been gone."
"Now, why would I want to avoid my own son?"
"Because you wanted to avoid the truth. A truth that's now out in the open. You lied to me, Mother. Lied to my FACE about Cliff Barnes not being my father."
The slight smile fades from Marilee's face as she stands and walks across the room. "Bradley......"
"Cliff and I took a DNA test, Mother," Brad says, standing to his feet to face her. "The test PROVES that Cliff Barnes is indeed my father."
"That's all you can say?" Brad asks. "You lied to me my entire life about who my father was, and that's all you can say? You're SORRY?"
"Just let me explain. Sweetheart, those years were very difficult for me. I married Seth Stone fresh out of college, and do you know WHY I married him? Because my father insisted that I marry Seth. He was much older than I was, and he'd been a friend and employee of my father's for years. My father.......good ol' Martin Hurst, a shrewd business man. Successful oil man. Founder of Hurst Oil. He was very successful in every way, except one. He wanted a son, but he was stuck with me instead. A daughter, and an only child. Well, in Texas in those days it was still unheard of to leave your company to a daughter in Texas. I guess Daddy felt that the failure to produce a male heir was a failure on Mama's part, and not his. So, Daddy largely ignored me. Then along came Seth Stone, who went to work for Daddy in the late 50s. Seth had been a part of the old Oil Cartel from the very beginning, so Daddy had known him for many years, and trusted him. Seth became his right hand man, and he groomed Seth to take over as the heir to Hurst Oil. Even named Seth as his heir in his will. Well, naturally, the solution to the problem of what to do with me, was to marry me off to Seth. I didn't really have a say in the matter. My father TOLD me I was gonna marry Seth Stone. My mother had passed away when I was still in high school, so, I didn't have her to go to bat for me, so to speak. So, I did what any dutiful daughter would do, and I married this older man, Seth Stone. A man old enough to be my father. A couple years after I married Seth, Daddy died of cancer and Seth inherited Hurst Oil, and renamed it Stone-Hurst. Imagine how that made me feel."
"Did you ever love him?" Brad asks. "At all?"
"No. Oh, I came to grow very fond of Seth. He was a good man. We were married for a few years and then your brother came along. But after that, after I gave him a son, Seth barely touched me. For more than two years we made love, maybe four times."
"So, you were frustrated and sought comfort in the arms of another man? A young man, Cliff Barnes?"
"Yes. I met Cliff when he was workin' as counsel for a senate committee investigatin' corruption in the oil business, and his main target was Ewing Oil, a close business associate of Seth's, and Jock Ewing had been a good friend of my father's. Imagine that. The daughter and wife of an oil man findin' comfort in the arms of a man investigating corruption in the very business that defined her father and her husband. But Cliff was very handsome. Very ambitious. Very driven. I met him when he gave a speech at a meeting of the Daughters Of The Alamo. I was vice president of the organization at the time. Cliff made me feel wanted again. Desirable again. But our tryst was very short lived, and we agreed never to talk about it again, and never to see each other again. That, however, was a promise neither of us could keep, because, well, two years later, Seth killed himself, and I inherited the company that my father had started. Cliff was also soon thrust into the oil business thanks to his mother, Rebecca Wentworth. So, Cliff and I became.......business associates, friends, enemies, a little bit of everything to one another over the years. At one time, we even renewed our past affair."
"And so what happened?" Brad asks. "You decided he wasn't good enough for you?"
Marilee smiles. "More the other way around. I had gotten on Cliff's bad side by doin' something that I deeply regretted, so, I wanted to make it up to him."
"Let me guess.....by seducing him?"
Marilee looks at her son for a moment. "After it was all over, Cliff basically told me to go to hell. It took a while before we were on speaking terms again."
"And all that time you and my real father were playing footsies, I was stuck on some boarding school back east because you didn't want anyone to know the truth. Mother, I'm sorry that you had such a crappy life with your father. Sorry that he treated you the way he did, and I'm sorry Seth Stone treated you the way HE did. But you had no right to make ME pay for that! I grew without a father OR a mother, and Seth Stone died believing the lie that I was his son. Thanks a lot for nothing." Brad turns and starts to leave.
"Bradley....."
He turns back to Marilee with an angry look.
Marilee walks over to him. "I hope that one day, you and I can get past this and you can forgive me. I hope that one day we can be mother and son."
"When were we ever mother and son?" Brad asks. "We were never anything but strangers. Maybe it's a good thing that Seth never knew the truth about his wife, and about the child he thought was his son." Without another word to his mother, Brad walks out of the office, closing the door.
Marilee starts to cry. She walks over to her desk and picks up a framed photo of Brad. "Oh, Bradley," she says quietly to the photo. "Seth knew. He found out that you weren't his son. And I sometimes wonder if that was the real reason he killed himself. But I guess we'll never really know, will we?"
Southfork....
Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital....
"You sure you're up to this, Steven?" Bum asks his son.
"Yeah, I wanna tell what happened," Steven says.
"Okay, go ahead," Lt. Daniels says.
Steven lets out a deep breath. "Scott and I had been to the gym. And we were going back to the station that evening. We'd been talking about the case. The Afton Cooper stalker case, and the murders. Scott seemed to think we should drop the case, but, I told him that I thought the killer was still out there. I didn't believe it was Austin Wentworth. We went back to my apartment before we were gonna head to the station, and the more we talked about it, the more bothered Scott became."
"Bothered.....how?" Daniels asks.
"Agitated. It was like he wanted the Wentworth kid to be guilty. When I questioned him about it, he got even more agitated and told me to drop it. When I asked him why.......that really set him off, and we got into a heated argument. And then I said something like, I told him that he must know something about this case, or else he wouldn't be so adamant about Wentworth being the killer of Jan Pierce and Jesse Matthews. The way he was acting, it was like he was losing it. Like his life depended on pinning these murders on Austin Wentworth. And I said that. Then he started talking about his father. Just, out of the blue, Scott started saying that I was messing everything up. That I was gonna ruin everything, just like his old man had done to him. I started to say something, but before I could, he hit me. I fell, and I must have hit my head, because, I went out like a light. That's the last thing I remembered until I woke up in here. I didn't even know I'd been shot."
"Well thank God you survived."
"You say Miller was talking about his father?" Bum asks.
"Yeah. Just said I was messing everything up like his old man had done. That didn't make any sense to me."
"Lt., I want in on this case," says Bum.
"Look, Mr. Jones, I realize you're a private investigator, but you need to let the police handle this."
"I'd like to know the answer to that question myself," says Cliff, who is now standing in the door with Tripp and Mitch.
"Barnes, what are you people doing here?" Daniels asks.
"I came here to see Detective Jones and see he's told you anything that could help find my daughter and Afton." Cliff walks into the room, then stops short when he sees Bum. "Wait, I know you. You were J.R. Ewing's personal private detective. What the hell are YOU doing here?"
"I'm here because Steven is my son," Bum replies.
"You gotta be kidding," Cliff says.
"Look, that's not important right now," Tripp says. "What about Pamela and Afton? Detective Jones, do you have any idea where your partner could have taken them?"
"No," Steven replies. "I'm sorry, but I don't." He then looks at his father. "Bum........I want you on the case."
"Jones," Lt. Daniels says.
"Look, I know he's not a cop, but he's the best P.I. in the business. If anyone can find Scott and those women.......my father can."
Bum looks at his son and smiles with pride, happy that Steven has called him his father for the first time in years.
Southfork.....afternoon
Heather looks at Lucas and smiles. "I cannot believe we just made love on the livin' room floor at Southfork, and with your grandfather's picture lookin' down on us."
Lucas smiles. "Well, from everything I've heard about my Grandpa Jock, I think he'd approve," he says, looking up at Jock's portrait over the fireplace. "Besides, we NEVER get to have Southfork all to ourselves, and who knows when this will ever happen again, so we might as well take advantage of it."
"I'm gonna have to do somethin' real nice for your cousin Lucy to repay her for takin' Michael to the water park today so we could have this time alone. It must be the floor, because that was the most phenomenal sex we have EVER had. Not that it's not phenomenal all the time, but today was just.......out of this world." Heather begins kissing him again.
"Hmmmm, I agree," Lucas says. "Heather, I've been thinking."
"About what?" She asks, laying her head on his bare chest.
"About us. You, me, Michael. About the three of us becoming a real family."
"We ARE a real family."
"I mean......legally. I'm Michael's father. And I love you."
Heather looks up at him. "So, what are you sayin', Lucas?"
"I want us to become a family in every sense of the word. Heather, I want you to marry me, and I want Michael to have my last name. But not Krebbs."
"Not Krebbs?" Heather asks.
"For a year or more, I've been seriously considering legally changing my name from Krebbs to Ewing. After all, I AM a Ewing. Bobby's my father, even though Ray raised me and gave me his last name. I think it's time I stopped thinking about changing my name, and actually did it. And that's the name I want you and Michael to share with me. Lucas Ewing, Heather Ewing, and Michael Ewing."
"Marriage? Lucas, I don't know. You know how my first marriage turned out."
"Yes, but I'm NOT Bo McCabe. I'm nothing like him, and I will do everything in my power to never give you a day of unhappiness. Heather, this has been the best year of my life. I found you again after all these years. Found out that Michael is my son. We've gotten closer, and you and Michael moved in here with me at Southfork. I couldn't ask for anything better. Except that you marry me."
"Lucas, I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet."
Lucas takes her by the hand. "I'm not pressuring you. I'm not rushing you. Heather, I am willing to wait for as long it takes for you to make up your mind. I love you and I love Michael, and I'm not goin' anywhere."
Heather smiles, then the two begin to kiss again.
Hawaiian Falls Water Park, Dallas....
"I sure am," Michael says. "Aunt Lucy, come go with me down the big slide!"
"Oh, the big one?" Lucy asks. "Sweety, I don't know about that one. It looks kinda scary."
"It's not scary, it's fun! Lucas took me on it last time we were here. Come on!"
"But, Michael, ya know I'm not as young as Lucas. Not sure I could recover from that."
"Oh, come on!" The boy pleads.
Lucy looks at him and smiles. "Okay. We'll give it a try. But first, wouldn't you like an ice cream cone?"
"I sure would!" Michael says with a smile.
"Good," Lucy says, happy that she had bought herself at least a little time before she had to go down the big water slide with her little cousin. She reaches into her purse and pulls out a $20. "Here, see that stand over there?" She asks, pointing to a stand through the crowd where ice cream cones, milk shakes, and other cold treats are sold. "Go over there and get me a large vanilla cone, and get yourself whatever you want."
"Whatever I want? REALLY?" Michael asks, slyly.
"Whatever you want, WITHIN reason. Now go on, and hurry back."
Michael smiles and nods, then turns and walks through the crowd toward the refreshment stand. Lucy watches him for a moment, then turns back and watches some of the other children playing in the pool. She watches with sadness a mother and two children, wishing she'd had the chance at motherhood.
Meanwhile, as Michael walks up to the refreshment stand and gets in line, a man is watching him from nearby. The man is none other than Bo McCabe, Heather's ex-husband and the man once believed to be Michael's father. Bo watches Michael for a moment, then finally approaches the child.
"Michael," Bo calls to the boy.
The child looks around to see who had called him.
"Michael?" Bo calls to him again.
Again the child looks around, and finally sees the man he once thought to be his father. He gets out of the line and walks over to him.
"Hey, buddy. How are you?"
"I'm good. What are you doing here?" The child asks.
"Your mom sent me," Bo replies quickly.
"She did? But why? I'm here with my Aunt Lucy."
"Well, your mom wants you to come on home to Southfork. She's sick and wants you home."
"What's wrong with her?" Michael asks.
"I'm really not sure, so let's go find out. She may have to go to the hospital."
"I didn't think that my Mom had even talked to you in a long time."
"She and I have been talking for a while now. You know, tryin' to make peace, for your sake."
"I should tell Aunt Lucy......"
"I already did," Bo says. "I sent your Aunt Lucy a text, so she knows you're gonna be coming with me. I've really missed you, buddy."
"I missed you, too."
"Then come on. I'll take you home, and on the way we can stop and get some ice cream or anything you want. Okay?"
Michael looks through the crowd and sees Lucy standing by the pool, watching the kids play.
"Come on, buddy, we need to hurry." Bo reaches his hand out to the child.
Michael reluctantly takes Bo's hand, and the two quickly leave together.
After a few minutes, Lucy looks at her watch. Michael should have been back by now, she thinks to herself. She turns and looks in the direction of the refreshment stand. She doesn't see Michael in line, or anywhere in the crowd. Becoming alarmed, Lucy stands and hurries over to the stand. "Michael!" She calls. "Michael? Michael, where are you? MICHAEL?" When she fails to find the child, Lucy starts to become frantic. "Excuse me," she says, pushing her way through the crowd to the stand. She makes her way to the front of the line. "Excuse me," she says to the person working the stand. "Have you seen a little blonde boy?"
"Lady, I've seen a HUNDRED little blonde boys today," the young man tells her.
"Has anyone seen a little blonde boy about so high?" Lucy asks, using her hand to demonstrate Michael's approximate height. "Please? Anyone?"
"I did see a little boy who was in line in front of me just a couple minutes ago," one woman says.
"You did?" Lucy asks. "Did you see where he went?"
"A man called him over to him. I assumed it was his father."
"A man?" Lucy asks, becoming frightened now. "And what happened to the little boy?"
"He went with the man. He seemed to know him."
Lucy gasps. "Oh my God. No!"
The Smithfield Cabin....
"No, I'm not, that breakfast we had on the way filled me up, and I should be good for a while," says Jimmy.
"Great," Justin says, looking at him. "Same here. I'm not hungry at all."
"This sure is a nice place."
"Yes, it sure is," Justin says, looking at him. "Perfect place for getting away from it all. Ya know, the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the city."
"Yeah," says Jimmy. "It's very relaxing here. Even better than that place we usually go fishing. I like the fact that this place is more isolated. Least we don't have to worry about other people fishing in our spot."
Justin looks at Jimmy for a moment before answering. "Yeah, I like that, too. The isolation. You can pretty much do anything you want up here, and no one would know," he finally says ominously.
"A fish fry?" Justin asks. "Yeah, sounds nice. Let's grab that small cooler, put some beer in it, and head on out."
Jimmy smiles, then walks over and opens the small cooler they had brought with them. Justin watches him as Jimmy takes several cans of beer from the larger cooler and transfers them to the smaller one, a look of anger on Justin's face. He was having to use every bit of his will power to keep from beating his nephew to a pulp right now. This nephew, his so called best friend who's had sex with his wife only the night before, and who was now here with him, acting as if nothing had happened. But he has something better in mind for Jimmy later.
Hawaiian Falls Water Park....
"What's the child's name?"
"Michael McCabe."
"His age?"
"He's 7."
"Are you a relative?" The guard asks.
"Yes, he's my cousin's little boy," Lucy replies. "Please, you have to go out and find him."
"Alright, ma'am, we're gonna do everything we can to find the child. We'll get video from the security cameras and ask question of anyone who was in the immediate vicinity."
"Video?" Lucy asks. "Security cameras? Okay, that's great then. Do it! We have to find him."
"In the meantime, ma'am, I suggest you contact the child's parents and have them get here as soon as possible."
Lucy looks at the man and her heart sinks. She dreads calling Lucas and Heather and letting them know that their son disappeared while she was watching him.
Dallas Police Department....
Bum turns to face him. "Yeah, what do you want, Barnes?"
"I wanna talk to you."
"About what?"
"About us workin' together to find this psycho," replies Cliff.
Bum looks at him for a moment. "You're right. We both want this bastard caught and brought to justice. So let's do this."
Cliff looks at Bum and nods.
A cabin in the woods near Rainy River, Ontario....
"Okay, ladies, we're here," he says, taking off their blindfolds. "Sorry about the blindfolds, but I had to take every precaution getting you here. Make yourselves at home, because this is it. This is gonna be home to us for a very, very long time."
"Why are you doing this?" Pamela asks. "What have we ever done to you? My mother was good to you when you were a child."
"Yes, that's right," Scott says. "Afton was very good to me. That's why we're here, Pammy. Because we're going to be a family again, the way we could've been all these years if my idiot of a father hadn't messed it all up. But this time, it's gonna be perfect, and NO ONE is gonna mess it up. Because we're here in this secluded place."
"Everyone must know by now that it was you who did all of this," Afton says. "When Detective Jones wakes up, he'll tell the police that you're the one who shot him, and they'll figure out that you have us."
Scott looks at her. "Well, you'd certainly better hope that doesn't happen, Pammy. Because if they do happen to track us down here, then I'll have no choice. I'll have to kill them."
Afton and Pamela exchanged frightened looks.
"Now then," Scott says. "We have plenty of food, so how about one of you ladies going into the kitchen and fixing us up something to eat? I don't know about you two, but I'm hungry."
Both Afton and Pamela remain still and silent. Their failure to do as he instructed seems to anger Scott.
"I'll go," Pamela says.
"No," says Scott. "I want Afton to go. Pamela, you're gonna stay here and keep me company. Go on, Afton."
Pamela and Afton again exchange worried looks, then Afton walks into the kitchen.
"Pamela, you might as well make yourself comfortable," Scott says. "This is gonna be our home from now on."
A frightened Pamela looks at Scott, wondering if she will ever see her husband and son again.
Hawaiian Falls Water Park in Dallas....
"Lucas, Heather, thank God you're here," Lucy says.
"Lucy, what happened? Where's my baby?" Asks a frantic Heather.
"Lucy, this isn't your fault," Lucas says.
"Are you the boy's parents?" Asks a security guard who approaches them.
"Yes, we are," Heather replies.
"I have my men out looking for your son, and asking questions of anyone who in the vicinity at the time. A woman said that she saw your son leaving with a very tall man. We've also alerted the Dallas Police, and everyone leaving the park is being searched, and questioned. We're gonna find your son."
"Unless this man has already left the park with Michael," Heather says.
"Heather, don't say that," Lucas tells her. "We're gonna find him."
"But they still could've had time to get out of the park, right?" Heather asks.
"Yes, they could have. We're pulling the tapes from all our security cameras from the vicinity of the refreshment stand at the kids' pool. We WILL be able to see the man who took your son."
Heather begins to cry. "Lucas, I'm so afraid."
"I know, honey, me too," Lucas says, putting his arms around her. "But we're gonna find him. I promise."
At that moment, another security guard walks in. "I have the tapes," he says.
"Thanks, John," says the first guard. "Now, let's take a look and see if we can't I.D. the man who took your son." The guard turns on the television in his office, then loads the disc into the player. He turns the player on, and an over head view can be seen of the refreshment stand. "Okay your son was reported missing at approximately 2:38 PM, so let's fast forward to that time frame." Using the remote, the guard fast forwards the video footage.
"It was just after 2:30 when Michael went to get the ice cream," Lucy says.
"Okay, let's see," the guard says, stopping the video footage at 2:31 PM. "There's the stand."
"And there's Michael," Heather says as they see her son walk up to the stand and get in line. They watch for a few seconds, then see Michael move out of line as a man with his back to the camera approaches him.
"That's gotta be him," Lucas says. They watch as the man talks to Michael for several seconds, then takes him by the hand.
"Anything about the man stand out or look familiar to any of you?" The guard asks.
"I.......I think so," says Heather. Then, she watches as Michael and the man turn around, facing the camera. The guard pauses the footage. "Oh my God!" Heather gasps.
"You know him?" The guard asks.
"Heather?" Lucas says.
"It's........it's Bo. Oh my God, Lucas........Bo has my son."
The lake near the Smithfield Cabin....
"You're havin' all kinds of luck over there, Jimbo," Justin says.
"Sure am," Jimmy says, taking the fish off the hook. He places it into a foam cooler with the others he has caught for the day. "Justin, is, umm......is everything okay? You've hardly said five words since we've been out here."
"Everything's fine," Justin says, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. "Any reason it wouldn't be, Jimmy?"
Justin looks at him. "Everything's just fine. Might say everything's as it should be."
"So how long's your Mom gonna be staying in town?"
"Dunno. Few days, maybe. She stayed with Sue Ellen last night, but today she's supposed to go out and spend the night with Amanda. Keep her comp'ny while I'm gone."
"Oh, well, that's good."
"Why's it good, Jimmy?" Justin asks, strangely.
"Well, I mean, I know how nervous Amanda is about staying way out there at the ranch all night," Jimmy says.
"Y'know, you sure a good friend, Jimmy," Justin says. "Best friend I ever had. You're always so concerned for my wife and her well bein'. And I really appreciate that."
"Well, what are friends for," Jimmy says, the guilt over his betrayal really beginning to eat at him now.
Justin lets out a slight laugh. "You're right. And what are friends for, Jimmy?"
"What do you mean?"
"How about we play a little game, Jim?" Justin asks, reeling his line in.
"What........what kinda game?"
"The what are friends for game," replies Justin. "You go first. Come on. Tell me, Jimmy. What do YOU think friends are for?"
A nervous Jimmy looks at Justin for a moment, his heart beginning to pound inside his chest as he starts to fear that Justin must know something by the way he's acting.
"Come on, bro," Justin says. "What's your idea of a true friend?"
"Well, umm, someone who's.........someone who's there for you no matter what."
"Good one. Now my turn. A friend. A true friend is someone who never lies to you. Now, your go."
"Justin, come on, man, what's this all about?" Jimmy asks.
"About? It's not about anything, bro. We're just relaxin' here by this real pretty lake playin' a friendly little game. Now go."
"Umm, okay," says an increasingly nervous Jimmy. "A friend is someone who always has your back, no matter what."
"Another good one," Justin says with a smile. "Oh, I got a real good one for ya. What is a TRUE friend? A true friend is someone who..........someone who DOESN'T sleep with your wife."
Jimmy's heart sinks after hearing Justin's words. "Justin......what are you talking about?" He asks, sweating now and almost shaking as he fears Justin's reply.
Justin stands to his feet. "You know EXACTLY what I'm talkin' about, BRO. You and Amanda."
"Don't even bother tryin' to deny it, man," Justin says, looking down at him. "I saw you. Last night, after I asked you to take my wife home, I decided to follow you. And do you know why, Jimmy?"
Jimmy remains silent, his guilt and shame now to the point that he couldn't even look at Justin.
"I said, do you KNOW WHY, JIMMY?" Justin asks again, raising his voice. Jimmy shakes his head. "Okay, then, let me enlighten ya," Justin continues. "A few days ago, I was havin' lunch at Avanti down the street from Ewing Oil with some investors, and I saw you and Amanda there. Havin' a nice, cozy lunch. Then later she lied to me about it. Told me she didn't even go out to lunch that day. Then Jeremy said somethin'......."
"Jeremy?" Jimmy asks. "Of course, Amanda's stupid brother."
"He aint so stupid, Jimmy. He knew somethin' was goin' on between you and my wife, and I guess Katie did, too. But me.........me, I was blind. Seems like everybody knew except ME. Guess I must be the world's biggest fool, huh? Is that what you and my wife were talkin' about last night before you had sex on my livin' room floor? Or maybe after you screwed your brains out. Did you laugh at how big a fool I am?"
Jimmy stands to his feet to face him. "Justin, look, man, this isn't what you think."
"Not what I think? Jimmy, I think I know what two people havin' sex looks like."
"No, dude, I mean, it only happened that one time. You gotta believe me."
"And that's supposed to make it alright, Jimmy?" Justin asks. "Oh, I had sex with your wife, but it only happened ONE time so don't hold that against me?"
"No, Justin, dude, I am SOOO sorry about this. I know you hate me right, but you've got to believe that neither Amanda nor I meant to ever hurt you. Justin, I'm sorry."
Justin stands before Jimmy, looking at him, with tears streaming down his face. "I loved you, Jimmy. You were my BEST friend. Best friend I ever had. But not only that, you're my FAMILY!! You're my brother's son, and you betrayed me in the worst way possible. It'd had been better if you'd taken a butcher knife and rammed it into my heart."
"I know, man, and if I could, I would take it all back," Jimmy says. "Justin, I'm so sorry, I never meant to develop these feelings for Amanda. It just happened."
"Feelin's, Jimmy? You got FEELIN'S for my wife? And obviously she's got FEELIN'S for you. Or maybe she really is just a tramp. After all, she married John Ross just to spy on him for Cliff Barnes. And while she was married to him, she slept with me. And who knows who else. Now she's slept with you. Well, one thing I can say about her is that she loves keepin' it in the fam'ly, huh?" Must be somethin' about ol' J.R. Ewing's boys that turns Amanda on for her to sleep with two of his sons and now his grandson."
"Okay, look, I know you probably wanna beat the crap outta me right now, so go ahead," Jimmy says. "Go ahead, man. I'm standing right in front of you, so just get it over with. Hit me."
"Hit you? No, Jimmy. I'm not gonna hit you. I'm gonna do more'n that," Justin says, reaching down to pick up his bag. He unzips the side pocket, and to Jimmy's horror, Justin pulls out a hand gun and points it directly at him. "I'm gonna do a LOT more than hit you," Justin says, pointing the gun at Jimmy's stunned face.
Dallas Police Department....
Katherine sighs. "I wish they'd hurry up," she says impatiently.
"Sweetheart, just calm down, these things take time," says Richard.
"And at least Austin is being freed," Jim says.
Katherine smiles. "That's true. I just can't believe they know who the real killer is and that this nightmare is finally over."
At that moment, the door opens, and Austin walks in, escorted by Lt. Steve Walden, head of the homicide division.
"Austin, sweetheart," Katherine says, embracing her son. "Thank God, this is over."
"So what happened?" Austin asks. "They didn't tell me anything, just that they're letting me go."
"The police know the identity of the real killer, Austin," Jim tells his young client.
"So who was it?" Austin asks.
Lt. Walden sighs. "I may as well tell you. You're gonna find out as soon as this hits the papers anyway. The person responsible for the murders of Jan Pierce and Jesse Matthews, was the very detective working on the case. Detective Scott Miller."
"What?" Austin asks. "That detective with the long hair?"
"Yeah."
"Good Lord," says Richard. "Are you people so desperate for cops around here that you hire psychopaths?"
"No one in the department had any idea that Detective Miller was unbalanced."
"Does that mean that he was the one terrorizing Afton Cooper, as well?" Jim Tatum asks.
"Well, this is just fantastic!" Says an angry Katherine. "You can't even trust the police, who are supposed to serve and protect. Instead, you've got one who is killing people and framing an innocent person for his crimes!"
"Is he in custody?" Austin asks.
"No. Unfortunately, Miller went on the run, and he took Afton Cooper and her daughter Pamela Barnes McKay with him."
"My God, that madman has Afton and my niece?" Katherine asks.
"Yes," Lt. Walden replies. "We have a nationwide all points bulletin out on him. We WILL find him."
"Before he manages to kill or hurt someone else, I hope," Richard says.
"Austin, I'm very sorry for everything you went through. For what it's worth, it doesn't appear that Miller targeted you for this. You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when Jan Pierce was murdered, and then, Miller decided he'd make you the scapegoat when he killed Jesse Matthews as well."
Austin sighs. "Wrong place, wrong time," he says sadly. "Just my luck."
"Come on, sweetheart, let's get out of here," Katherine says.
"Yes, we need to head back to San Francisco this evening," says Richard. "My son Kevin and your niece Emma are getting married tomorrow afternoon, and since the wedding is going to be at my house, I probably should be there."
"Yes," Katherine says. "Austin, I hope that you'll come with us to California."
"Maybe. I need to get out of Dallas for a few days."
"Austin, again, on behalf of my department, I'm very sorry for everything you've been put through," Lt. Walden says.
"Not as sorry as you're going to be," says an angry Katherine. "I intend to initiate a lawsuit against your department for wrongful arrest and anything else I can come up with! Let's go." Katherine brushes past the Lt. and walks out of the room, followed by Austin, Richard, and Jim.
Meanwhile....
"You have some news?" Bum asks.
"Yes, I do. And, what's in this report blows my mind."
"What is it?" Tripp asks.
"Scott Miller was an alias. The man I knew and trusted as Scott Miller........his real name is Scott Van Buren. He's from Biloxi, Mississippi."
"Biloxi?" Cliff asks. "That's Afton's home town. Wait a minute. Van Buren? That's the last name of that guy Afton was married to, uhh......."
"Harrison Van Buren," Mitch says.
"Yes, that's right," says Cliff.
"Oh my God," says Mitch.
"What?" Cliff asks.
"Scott Van Buren. That's Harrison's son."
Cliff's mouth falls open in shock as he and Tripp exchange looks. "Harrison Van Buren had a SON?" Cliff asks.
"Yes. Strange, very timid little kid," Mitch replies. "Whenever I use to visit Afton and Harrison when they were married, I remember Scotty use to always cling to Afton. Followed her everywhere, and never wanted to let her out of his sight."
"Oh my God," says Cliff. "And now he's an adult and a full blown nutcase who has Afton and Pamela."
"Lt., are you absolutely sure about this?" Mitch asks. "That Scott Miller is Scotty Van Buren?"
"Positive. Oh, he was good at covering his tracks, but, Scotty Van Buren was arrested at age 17 for vandalism. His prints match Scott Miller's, and we found some documents hidden very well in Miller's apartment."
"I'd like to take a look at those," Bum says.
"I'm sorry, Jones, but I can't let that happen," Lt. Daniels says.
"Let him," comes a voice from the doorway behind them. The men turn around and are surprised to see Steven there.
"Steven, what are you doing here?" Bum says. "You're supposed to be in the hospital."
"No, Detective, you're NOT," says Lt. Daniels. "You're wounded, and you're gonna get your ass back to that hospital."
"The Lt. is right, son," Bum says.
"No. Look, I know Scott Miller better than just about anybody. He was my partner for two years. We rode together. Spent a lot of hours together. All these months I've worked with Scott on this case, and I never suspected anything until the night he shot me. I slipped up and let this happen, and now, two womens' lives are at stake because I didn't use my police training and figure this out sooner."
"Steven, no one could have known," Daniels says. "Scott was a MASTER at deceiving people. He had a complete life history fabricated to pull this off. Even a background check didn't turn up anything. Now I'm ORDERING you back to that hospital."
"He hid his true self from me all that time, but I think I can STILL get inside his head," Steven says. "You need me on this case. I'm fine. Lt., you can suspend me, fire, me, whatever. But nothing is gonna stop me from helping. Anyone who tries to arrest me, I can promise they'd better bring an army to do it."
Daniels turns and looks at Bum. "He's YOUR son. Can't you talk some sense into him?"
Bum looks at Steven and smiles. "My son knows what he's doing."
"Let him help," Tripp says. "He may be the only one who can actually figure out what Miller, or Van Buren is all about."
"What about Harrison, the kid's father?" Cliff asks Mitch. "Is he still alive?"
"There's one way to find out," Bum says.
"I'll contact the Biloxi police and have them do some checking, see if Van Buren is still in town, or if they know where we can find him," says Daniels.
"In the meantime, I'm gonna do some checking on my own," says Bum.
"Now, look," Daniels says. "I'm warning ALL of you. This is a police matter, and if I catch any of you interfering with this investigation, I'm gonna arrest ya." He walks over to his desk and picks up his phone.
"Excuse me, I have a call to make," Bum says as he steps out of the office.
The lake near the Smithfield Cabin....
"What's it look like, Jimmy? What's it look like I'm doin', BRO? I'm holdin' a gun on you."
"Somebody?" Justin asks. "Maybe YOU, Jimbo?"
"Man, what are you gonna do? Kill me? Justin, we're family. We share the same blood. You gonna really murder your own nephew in cold blood?"
"My nephew? You were more'n that, Jimmy. You were my best friend. MY BEST FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Justin yells, startling Jimmy. Justin begins to cry. "I TRUSTED YOU MAN!!!! I TRUSTED YOU WITH EVERYTHING!!! I SAVED YOUR SORRY LIFE WHEN THAT NICK GUY KIDNAPPED YOU AND WAS GONNA KILL YOU FOR THAT MONEY YOU OWED HIM!!! I saved your life and made you a part of the Foundation and this is how you repay me? By bedding my wife? A woman I have loved more than life itself. A woman I gave my EVERYTHING to!"
Jimmy also begins to cry. "Justin, I'm sorry, dude. I really am. If I could take it back, I would...."
"Justin, stop it, man!"
"I got nothin' to live for, Jimmy, and YOU did that to me! I thought I had everything. A beautiful wife who loved me, a beautiful home. A future. A BEST FRIEND WHO WOULD NEVER BETRAY ME LIKE THIS!!!!!"
"Dude, Amanda does love you," Jimmy says. "And I love you."
"Yeah, sure. I saw how much the two of you LOVED me last night when you were havin' sex on the floor of the livin' room of the house that I bought for Amanda! How could you do this to me?" Justin cries. "I loved you like a BROTHER, Jimmy! I TREATED YOU LIKE A BROTHER! I should've known. Nobody in my life has ever really gave a damn about me."
"That's not true. How can you say that?"
"It's easy. My Mama. She never even told me who my father was until J.R. was already dead and gone! Because of her I never got to know him. My own father! And what about J.R.? If he ever gave a damn about me, then why didn't he come into my life? Why didn't he invite me to Southfork to meet John Ross and the rest of the Ewings? Then, when I found out who I really was and I came here to Dallas to meet my fam'ly......to get to know them........John Ross, MY OWN BROTHER, turned against me. My own big brother wanted nothin' to do with me. He even tried to keep me from gettin' the inheritance that my daddy had left me. Maybe J.R. really did love me after all, because he left me some money and some stock. But John Ross tried to take that away from me! And now, my own nephew, the one person I thought I could ALWAYS count on, bedded my wife! So what do I have left?"
"STOP TELLIN' ME THAT PEOPLE LOVE ME!!!" Justin yells.
"Justin, we made a MISTAKE!"
"Mistake, my ass," Justin says. "You don't fall into bed with another man's wife by MISTAKE. You and my whore of a wife made a conscious choice to sleep together. I guess I should've known that this would happen all along."
"What the hell's that supposed to mean?" Jimmy asks.
"That old sayin', if they cheat with you, they'll cheat on you. Boy, was that one ever true."
"Look, Amanda and I are human, dude. We messed up. We hurt you, and for that, I'm sorry. But you don't have to do this. Justin, I'll go away, I swear. Just put that gun down and let's go back to Dallas, and I'll just pack up and leave. I'll move back east with my parents and my sisters."
"You really think that's gonna FIX THIS? NOTHIN' CAN FIX THIS! But if I blow my brains out all over you, Jimmy, then will you ever be able to forget that? Would you ever be able to sleep with Amanda again without seein' my brains splattered all over these woods? You'd never have a minute's peace again, and THAT, would be the ultimate revenge for what you did to me. For destroyin' my life."
As Justin again raises the gun to his temple and is about to cock it, Jimmy quickly lunges for him. "NOOOOOO!!!!" Jimmy yells as he lunges and tackles Justin, knocking him to the ground and the gun from his hand. The gun flies several feet away and lands in the grass. The two young men land on the ground, two feet apart, Justin's top shirt ripped off.
Justin scrambles to his feet and makes for the gun, but Jimmy grabs his foot and forces him to the ground
Justin yells as he lunges for Jimmy, tackling him to the ground and getting on top of him. He punches Jimmy hard across the face, giving him a bloody lip. Jimmy manages to shove Justin off of him by using his foot. Justin falls on his back. Jimmy and Justin get back to their feet at the same time. Jimmy punches Justin, knocking him backward. Justin quickly rebounds and punches Jimmy across the face again. This time, before Jimmy can recover from the punch, Justin grabs him around the neck and puts him in a choke hold.
"JUSTIN!!!!" Jimmy yells. He quickly moves to the edge and sees that Justin has grabbed onto a small tree growing from the side of the cliff. He lays down on his stomach, his head and upper chest over the side of the cliff. "Justin, here......take my hand," Jimmy says, extending his hand to his uncle.
"Come on, man, hold on!" Jimmy tells him. "I got you, just hold on!!"
Realizing he would not be able to hold on any longer, Justin looks up into Jimmy's face, tears in both their eyes, and with his eyes, Justin appears to say goodbye to Jimmy as his hand slips further, and then, Justin slips all together out of Jimmy's grasp!
Jimmy watches in horror as Justin falls from the cliff. "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" He screams!!!
